Imagine replacing a bedside lamp with a glowing plant—and not just any plant, but a succulent infused with subtle, soft light. Researchers at South China Agricultural University achieved this by injecting micron-sized phosphor particles (around the width of a red blood cell) into Echeveria ‘Mebina’ leaves. The particles absorb sunlight or LED light during the day, then emit a gentle glow for up to two hours after dusk bright enough to read by. Unlike earlier genetic engineering attempts limited to faint green hues, this new approach spans multiple colors green, blue, red, cyan, even warm-white offering both ambience and function.
A striking demonstration: a wall of 56 glowing succulents providing sufficient illumination for reading. Succulents work best due to their spacious internal structure, allowing uniform distribution of particles. The method is quick, low-cost (about $1–2 per plant), and noninvasive making it a promising step toward sustainable, plant-based lighting. Future visions include glowing gardens, eco street-lamps, or desktop companions that harvest daylight and glow at night bridging nature with next-gen design.
