The search and rescue operation following the collapse of the old bridge over the Vishwamitri river in Vadodara has entered its fourth day, with the death toll rising to 20. Rescue officials, along with teams from the NDRF, SDRF, and fire services, are continuing to search for one individual still reported missing.
In addition to search efforts, the teams have begun the removal of the bridge’s main slab and several submerged vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers swept away during the collapse. According to preliminary reports, the collapse was caused by the crushing of pedestals and failure of articulation joints - critical components that help bridges handle structural shifts and load.
Local villagers, despite their grief, have played a key role in rescue efforts, helping emergency teams navigate the swollen river and difficult terrain. The government has announced compensation for the victims' families, while structural engineers have been tasked with inspecting similar bridges across the region to prevent further disasters.
