Meghalaya’s misty hills now host a unique dining destination: Sohra 1885, a heritage café carved out of a 140‑year‑old colonial police station in Cherrapunji (Sohra). Once notorious as a prison during British rule, its former lockups have been creatively converted into intimate dining booths—guests literally dine “behind bars” while soaking in antique charm.
Opened on May 22, Sohra 1885 preserves original flooring, walls, a 200‑kg refurbished safe, and even the fireplace—all restored thoughtfully to retain historical authenticity. The venture, helmed by Meghalaya Police’s East Khasi Hills Superintendent Vivek Syiem along with entrepreneur Nafi Nongrum, was launched after a new police station building freed up the old premises, allowing the monetisation of the heritage site. Profits are funneled into police welfare initiatives.
Catering up to around 100 guests, the café blends nostalgia with hospitality—serving delectable dishes in a setting echoing colonial-era stories. Local patrons and tourists alike are enchanted by the novelty, with many praising the ambiance and history-laden dining experience.
