Thai authorities arrested Wilawan Emsawat, a 35‑year‑old woman from Nonthaburi province, after uncovering a massive extortion operation involving senior Buddhist monks. Investigators seized more than 80,000 photos and over 5,000 video clips from her devices, documenting her intimate relationships with revered monksc - many of whom she allegedly blackmailed into paying sums to avoid public scandal .

Over a three‑year span, Emsawat received approximately 385 million baht (around Rs 101 crore / US $11.9 million) from monastery bank accounts and senior clergy members. She reportedly spent much of the money on online gambling, car gifts, and other luxury items .

At least nine senior monks have since been disrobed or voluntarily renounced monkhood, and investigations now target over a dozen temples across Thailand. The scandal began after a respected abbot abruptly fled the country, revealing a blackmail demand of 7.2 million baht (~US $222,000) by Emsawat over a claimed pregnancy.

In response, the Thai government has proposed stricter monastic regulations, enhanced oversight of temple finances, and the Sangha Supreme Council has initiated reforms to restore public trust in Buddhist institutions.
