A pair of Kolhapuri-style sandals on a global runway. Embroidery that looks straight out of Indian craftsmanship is showcased as couture. Silhouettes that resemble kurtas are now labelled as high fashion. It all feels familiar, yet somehow different.
Luxury brands like Prada, Dior, and Gucci have increasingly drawn from Indian aesthetics. Whether it is traditional footwear, detailed embroidery, or relaxed silhouettes, elements that have existed in India for decades are now being reintroduced on global platforms.
The strategy behind this is not accidental. India offers a rich visual and cultural identity that feels both unique and timeless. For global brands constantly searching for something “new,” Indian design provides inspiration that is already tested, meaningful, and visually striking. By adapting these elements, brands are able to present something that feels fresh to international audiences while still rooted in tradition.
However, this shift also raises important questions. When these designs are showcased by luxury labels, they are often priced higher and positioned as premium fashion. Meanwhile, the same styles, when worn locally, are seen as everyday or traditional wear. This creates a contrast where value is not based on the design itself, but on who presents it.
The conversation then moves beyond fashion into recognition. Are these influences being acknowledged, or simply repackaged? While global exposure brings attention to Indian craftsmanship, it also highlights the gap between inspiration and credit.
In many ways, Indian fashion has always influenced global style. The difference now is visibility. What was once local is now global, but the real question remains: who gets the recognition for it?
