Chronic stress is often dismissed as an emotional burden, but on this World Mental Health Day, medical experts warn it’s far more dangerous, quietly damaging both body and mind.
When the body’s “fight-or-flight” system remains active long after a threat has passed, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline wreak havoc. Over time, this can compromise immunity, disrupt digestion, and raise risks of chronic illnesses including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and autoimmune disorders.
Mentally, unchecked stress contributes to anxiety, depression, memory lapses, cognitive decline, insomnia, and mood swings.
The World Health Organization cautions that stress can worsen pre-existing health conditions and drive substance use as people try to cope.
To mitigate the damage, experts recommend a combination of regular exercise, mindfulness practices, healthy sleep, balanced diet, and social support.
This Mental Health Day, the message is clear: stress is not just a mental burden — it’s a systemic threat. Recognising it early and acting is vital to protecting long-term health.
