We often pop antibiotics or acid-suppressing drugs like PPIs at the first sign of discomfort. But while these meds are medical marvels, their overuse may be quietly wrecking our gut microbiome.
Antibiotics don't just kill harmful bacteria-they wipe out the good ones too. This leads to a loss of microbial diversity, paving the way for digestive issues, inflammation, and even chronic diseases like type 1 diabetes or IBD.
Proton pump inhibitors, commonly used for acidity and reflux, can also damage gut balance. Studies show they reduce beneficial microbes while giving rise to harmful ones-and shockingly, 70% of PPI prescriptions are unnecessary.
Experts now call for a more mindful approach. Only use antibiotics or PPIs when absolutely necessary. If you do need them, restore gut health with probiotics, prebiotics, and fiber-rich foods.
Your gut isn't just about digestion-it's the core of your immune system and mental well-being. Protect it with a healthy diet, stress control, and by questioning over-medication. Your body-and your gut-will thank you.
