India’s rising heatwaves are becoming more than just a summer problem - they are turning into a serious health risk. With temperatures crossing 40°C in many cities, doctors say extreme heat can quietly affect the body long before people realise something is wrong.
When the body stays overheated for too long, it struggles to cool itself naturally. This puts pressure on important organs like the heart, kidneys, brain, and lungs. Excessive sweating also causes rapid dehydration, reducing the body’s water and electrolyte levels. In severe cases, this can lead to heat exhaustion or even dangerous heatstroke.
Some of the most common warning signs include dizziness, headaches, muscle weakness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and unusual tiredness. Doctors warn that ignoring these symptoms during extreme heat can become risky very quickly.
To stay protected, experts recommend drinking enough water, consuming electrolyte-rich drinks like ORS, coconut water, and chaas, and avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. Wearing loose cotton clothes, eating lighter meals, and taking cooling showers can also help the body handle the heat better.
Children, elderly people, outdoor workers, and people with existing health conditions are considered the most vulnerable during heatwaves.
As temperatures continue rising across India, experts say protecting the body from extreme heat is no longer optional — it is becoming essential for survival.
