Historically, March 27 serves as a testament to India’s long journey from foundational academic achievements to becoming a global space superpower. In 1852, a significant chapter in Indian education was written when the first medical degrees were awarded by the University of Calcutta (then under the Medical College of Bengal), marking the formalization of modern medical practice in the subcontinent. This paved the way for generations of Indian doctors to contribute to global healthcare.
Fast-forwarding to the 21st century, March 27, 2019, marked the success of "Mission Shakti." India successfully conducted an Anti-Satellite (A-SAT) missile test, destroying a live satellite in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). This achievement made India the fourth country in the world—after the US, Russia, and China—to possess such advanced space warfare capabilities. The mission was a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), showcasing India's indigenous technological prowess.
Additionally, the day is culturally significant as the birth anniversary of Hemanta Mukherjee (born 1920), the legendary playback singer and composer who became a quintessential voice in both Bengali and Hindi cinema. His melodies remain a staple of India’s musical heritage, bridging the gap between classical influence and popular film music.
