Buying pearl jewellery may look simple, but there’s more to it than just picking something pretty. Pearls are unique because no two are exactly the same, and understanding a few basics can completely change how you choose.
First, focus on types of pearls. Freshwater pearls are more affordable and come in different shapes, while Akoya pearls are known for their perfect round shape and high shine. South Sea and Tahitian pearls are larger, rarer, and often more expensive.
Next comes lustre, which is the shine and glow of the pearl. A high-quality pearl reflects light clearly and looks almost mirror-like. This is one of the biggest factors that defines its value.
Surface quality also matters. Minor imperfections are natural, but smoother pearls are usually considered more premium.
Don’t ignore size and shape. Perfectly round pearls are classic, but baroque (irregular) pearls are trending and add a modern touch.
Lastly, always check authenticity and buy from trusted sellers. Real pearls feel slightly gritty when rubbed against your teeth, unlike fake ones.
With the right knowledge, buying pearls becomes less confusing and way more exciting.
