As summer temperatures continue to rise, sleeping with the air conditioner on has become a daily habit for many people. But along with comfort comes a common concern - does sleeping in AC weaken immunity? According to health experts, the answer is no, at least not directly.
Doctors explain that air conditioning itself does not weaken the immune system. In fact, sleeping in a cool and comfortable environment can improve sleep quality, reduce stress and help the body recover better. The real problem usually comes from poor AC maintenance and unhealthy usage habits.
Air conditioners reduce humidity levels indoors, which may dry out the nose, throat and skin. This can lead to irritation, coughing, sneezing, sore throat or sinus discomfort. Dirty AC filters may also circulate dust, allergens and bacteria, increasing the chances of allergies and respiratory issues. Many people often mistake these symptoms as signs of weak immunity.
Experts also warn against setting the temperature too low. Constantly moving between extreme outdoor heat and freezing indoor temperatures can put stress on the respiratory system, especially for people with asthma, allergies or sinus problems. Maintaining the AC temperature between 24°C and 26°C is considered ideal for healthy sleep.
Doctors say factors like dehydration, lack of sleep, stress and poor lifestyle habits weaken immunity far more than sleeping in AC. Staying hydrated, cleaning filters regularly and ensuring proper ventilation can help avoid most AC-related health issues.
