Historically, March 26 serves as a powerful reminder of "Satyagraha" in its many forms—whether protecting the environment or fighting for national sovereignty. It is a day that celebrates the courage of rural women in the hills of Uttarakhand and the resilience of a people seeking self-determination in the East.
Significant Historical Milestones
• The Chipko Movement (1974): On this day, led by Gaura Devi, a group of women in Reni village, Uttarakhand, hugged trees to prevent them from being felled by commercial loggers. This "tree-hugging" protest sparked a global environmental movement, proving that grassroots non-violent resistance could successfully challenge state-sanctioned deforestation.
• Independence of Bangladesh (1971): March 26 marks the National Day of Bangladesh. Following the start of "Operation Searchlight" by the Pakistani military, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of East Pakistan as Bangladesh. This sparked the Liberation War, in which India played a pivotal strategic and military role, eventually leading to a decisive victory in December 1971.
• First Indian Woman Physician (1886): While her graduation occurred in mid-March, this week historically commemorates the return and recognition of Anandi Gopal Joshi, the first Indian female practitioner of western medicine, who paved the way for women in Indian science and healthcare.
• Establishment of the Sahitya Akademi (1954): The Government of India formally inaugurated the National Academy of Letters on this date. For over seven decades, it has remained the premier institution for the promotion of literature in the 24 languages of India, awarding the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Awards.
Notable Birthdays on March 26
• Mahadevi Varma (1907): Born on this day, she was one of the four pillars of the "Chhayavad" era in Hindi literature. Often called the "Modern Meera," the Jnanpith Award winner was a trailblazing poet, educator, and advocate for women’s rights in India.
• Prakash Raj (1965): A versatile powerhouse in Indian cinema, known for his work across Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi films. A multiple National Film Award winner, he is recognized for his intense character roles and contribution to the arts.
Current Events: March 26, 2026
• Environmental Awareness: Various NGOs across India are hosting "Green Seminars" today to honor the Chipko legacy, focusing on modern challenges like urban heat islands and the protection of the Aravalli and Western Ghats ranges.
