In a strategic move to modernize India’s energy infrastructure and reduce the logistical burden of cylinder distribution, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a new regulatory order. Under this mandate, Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is now compulsory for all "notified consumers"—which includes specific residential complexes, commercial establishments, and industrial units located within areas already covered by City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks.
The most critical aspect of this order is the transition timeline. Once a PNG connection is made available to a notified household or business, the supply of subsidized or commercial LPG cylinders will be permanently discontinued after a three-month grace period. This policy aims to eliminate the "dual-fuel" usage pattern, where consumers maintain both a pipe and a cylinder, which officials argue creates safety risks and inefficiencies in the supply chain.
For consumers, the shift promises a continuous, "pay-as-you-use" fuel supply, removing the need for advance bookings or physical deliveries. However, the mandate has sparked discussions regarding the upfront costs of internal pipeline installation and the readiness of CGD infrastructure in older urban pockets. The government has directed Gas Distribution Companies (GDCs) to expedite the "last-mile connectivity" to meet the three-month deadline. This transition is a cornerstone of India’s broader vision to increase the share of natural gas in its primary energy mix from 6% to 15% by 2030, significantly lowering the nation's carbon footprint and reducing the heavy reliance on imported liquefied petroleum gas.
