Tamil Nadu Professor Builds 100 Bridges to Empower Rural Ethiopia

Kannan Ambalam, a professor from Tamil Nadu, has significantly impacted rural communities in Ethiopia by solving practical problems like access to education and healthcare. Since 2009, he has lived in Ethiopia as a public administration professor at Wollega University. His work goes far beyond academia, however; it spans community-driven development, particularly in the Oromia region.

One of Kannan's defining moments came when he witnessed an elderly woman struggling to cross a stream during a field trip with students. Determined to help, he teamed up with the villagers to build a bridge using basic materials like wood and rope. The bridge transformed the villagers' daily lives, giving them safe access to essential services. This initiative inspired Kannan to build over 100 bridges across Ethiopia, reducing school dropout rates and facilitating better access to healthcare. His efforts extended to developing 70 water springs, addressing critical drinking water shortages.

Remarkably, Kannan had no formal background in civil engineering; he taught himself bridge construction through social media and documentaries. His hands-on approach involved working alongside villagers, contributing steel reinforcements, cement, and other materials. His dedication earned him prestigious awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award and Ethiopia’s Outstanding Teacher award.

Now back in Tamil Nadu, Kannan has set his sights on improving sanitation. He plans to build toilets and provide pucca roofs for houses in Salur village, continuing his mission to uplift underserved communities. His legacy of service is carried forward by his students, who continue his work in Ethiopia.
