Rahul Sharma reveals why did his company, Micromax, failed?

Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax and husband of actress Asin, recently reflected on the meteoric rise and fall of Micromax.

Once a dominant player in the Indian mobile market, Micromax reached a peak turnover of Rs 12,000-15,000 crore, rivaling global giants like Nokia and Samsung.

However, the company's success was short-lived as it faced challenges from emerging Chinese brands. Sharma explained that, despite its early innovation, Micromax was forced into a tough spot as Chinese manufacturers secured exclusive deals, hindering the company's ability to innovate.

"Bouncer after bouncer, clean-bowled by full-toss," he shared, illustrating the challenges the company faced.

A crucial turning point was when Micromax turned down an $800 million investment from Alibaba in 2014, a decision Sharma later admitted was a mistake.

With the shift in the supply chain and increased competition, Micromax struggled. Sharma eventually pivoted to the manufacturing sector, finding more success than ever before.

Today, his new ventures are earning significantly more than Micromax ever did.
