A prenuptial agreement, or prenup, is a legal deal couples sign before marriage. It clearly mentions who owns what, how money, property, or debts will be handled during and after marriage - especially if things don’t work out.
Earlier, people thought prenups were only for celebrities or millionaires, but that’s changing fast. A 2023 U.S. survey says 1 in every 5 married couples now has a prenup! It’s not about expecting a breakup - it’s about being clear, mature, and fair.
A prenup lists:
Each partner’s assets and savings
Who owns what after marriage
Who pays which debts
Rules for alimony or property division if they ever separate
It’s a smart move for couples with businesses, property, or prior commitments. Even older couples use it to protect their retirement funds or children’s inheritance.
But remember - courts reject prenups signed under pressure or right before the wedding. So couples should plan it calmly and openly.
In today’s world, where money and love go hand in hand, a prenup isn’t a red flag - it’s a sign of trust and transparency.
