Since April 24, Pakistan has barred Indian carriers from using its airspace, following India's retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
The closure has impacted over 600 west-bound international flights from airlines like Air India and IndiGo, causing delays of 15 minutes to 1.5 hours and forcing 120 flights to make fuel stops.
Indian routes to Europe, North America, and the Middle East now loop southward over the Arabian Sea via Muscat.
Industry experts estimate a monthly cost impact of $10- 15 million due to fuel, overtime, and disruptions. Foreign airlines continue to access Pakistani airspace, giving them a competitive edge.
Airlines may hike fares unless the Indian government steps in with subsidies. The Ministry of Civil Aviation is exploring solutions, including alternate northern routes. In 2019, a similar closure cost Indian airlines ₹540 crore.
Now, India may respond by shutting its airspace to Pakistani carriers and ports.
