Every year on November 1, India observes a significant milestone in its federal architecture: the foundation day of eight states — Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu — alongside five Union Territories: Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Delhi, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
The re-organization stems from the landmark States Reorganisation Act 1956 and subsequent reforms, aiming to align state boundaries with linguistic and cultural identities — particularly for states formed in 1956 and later. Participating in these celebrations, state capitals host flag-hoisting, cultural shows and award ceremonies to honour regional heritage and development. For example, at Raj Niwas (Ladakh), the event covered all these states and UTs simultaneously under the umbrella of the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative.
The significance lies in more than a date — it’s a reminder of how India’s internal map has been redrawn multiple times to promote equity, identity and governance. As these states and territories mark their foundation, they reflect the ongoing journey of unity in diversity across India.
