From the Birth of Ustad Bismillah Khan to the End of the Emergency!

Historically, March 21 stands as a bridge between India’s classical heritage and its democratic resilience. It marks the birth of a musical icon who brought the Shehnai to the global stage and the exact moment in 1977 when the constitutional "dark cloud" of the Emergency was lifted. Additionally, the date aligns with global celebrations of poetry and puppetry—two art forms deeply woven into the fabric of Indian regional storytelling.

Significant Historical Milestones

• Birth of Ustad Bismillah Khan (1916): Born in Bihar, the legendary Shehnai maestro redefined Indian classical music. He famously performed at the Red Fort on August 15, 1947, as the Indian flag was hoisted for the first time. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2001 for his lifelong contribution to the arts.

• The End of the Emergency (1977): Following the decisive general election results where the Congress party was defeated, the 21-month-long Emergency was officially withdrawn on this day. This restored fundamental rights, lifted press censorship, and marked a major turning point in India's political history.

• Establishment of the Bahujan Samaj Party (1984): While the party was formally launched on Ambedkar Jayanti, the foundational movements and major organizational milestones led by Kanshi Ram reached a critical mass during this period in March, aiming to represent the "Bahujans" (SC, ST, and OBC communities).

• World Puppetry Day (Modern Observation): Today, India celebrates its ancient puppetry traditions, such as Kathputli from Rajasthan, Tholu Bommalata (leather shadow puppets) from Andhra Pradesh, and Putul Naach from West Bengal. These forms are recognized as vital tools for both entertainment and social education.
