India is witnessing a slight rise in COVID-19 cases, with active infections crossing the 250 mark. As of May 19, 2025, the country reported 257 active cases, with most being mild and requiring no hospitalization.
The Union Health Ministry and agencies like the IDSP and ICMR are closely monitoring the situation. Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are seeing the highest increase, logging 69, 44, and 34 new cases respectively.
Although two deaths were reported in Maharashtra, hospital authorities clarified these were not caused by COVID-19.
Experts suggest that COVID-19 follows a cyclical pattern, with case surges expected every 6–9 months. Due to high levels of immunity from vaccinations and past infections, the virus is currently considered less severe.
A high-level review meeting involving NCDC, ICMR, and other government bodies concluded that the situation remains under control.
While Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, China, and Thailand are experiencing notable surges due to Omicron subvariants such as JN.1, LF.7, and NB.1.8, there is no confirmed presence of these strains in India at the moment.
