At India’s National Space Day, ISRO revealed the BAS-01 Base Module, a 3.8 m × 8 m, ~10-tonne prototype featuring indigenous life-support, docking mechanisms, automated hatches, and microgravity research platforms a glimpse into India’s orbital future. Planned for a 2028 launch, it sets the foundation for five interconnected modules orbiting at 400–450 km.
BAS aims to position India among the elite space-station-operating nations—joining the US-led International Space Station (ISS) and China’s Tiangong—allowing astronauts to live aboard for 3–6 months, carry out experiments, and test long-duration life-support systems. Originally slated for completion by 2030, the timeline was extended to 2035, impacted by Gaganyaan delays and pandemic disruptions. The project spans weight (~52 tonnes), modular structure, robotic arm facilities, and strategic inclination (~51.5°) to ensure global compatibility.
As an aspiration, BAS symbolizes India's leap toward sustained human presence in orbit, commercial space ventures, and enhanced international collaboration a cornerstone in India’s space roadmap.
