The Indian Armed Forces, comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Force,- each have distinct saluting styles, symbolizing their unique traditions and roles.
Saluting in the military is a longstanding gesture of respect, discipline, and order, seen prominently during national events like Independence Day and Republic Day parades.
The Indian Army salutes with an open palm facing forward, fingers and thumb together, and the middle finger near the hatband. This method emphasizes hierarchy and discipline, crucial in maintaining order during wartime.
The Indian Navy, on the other hand, salutes with the palm facing downward, perpendicular to the ground.
This tradition originates from historical conditions—naval hands were often soiled with grease or oil, and this gesture helped maintain respect.
The Indian Air Force uses a salute with the palm angled at 45 degrees to the ground, striking a balance between the Army and Navy styles.
Earlier, the Air Force followed the Army's salute, but changed it on March 15, 2006, to reflect its distinct identity. The new salute also symbolizes the ascent of aircraft, capturing the essence of the Air Force's aerial domain.
