Why do people not consume rice on 'ekadashi' ?

Ekadashi is a special day in the Hindu calendar, celebrated twice a month. On this day, many people fast, which means they do not eat certain foods. One common food that is avoided is rice. But why is that?

Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. Devotees believe that fasting helps purify the mind and body, making it easier to connect with the divine. Eating rice on this day is thought to distract from spiritual practices.

There are interesting stories behind this tradition. One popular tale involves Maharishi Medha, who sacrificed himself on Ekadashi to please Goddess Shakti. His body transformed into rice and barley, making their consumption on this day seem inappropriate. This story reinforces the idea that eating rice is disrespectful during Ekadashi.

According to stories, it is also believed that Lord Vishnu rests in a deep meditative state on Ekadashi. It is said that on this day, all sins and negative energies gather in grains, especially rice. Eating rice on Ekadashi is believed to bring bad energy into your body and mind, which goes against the purpose of the day, purifying yourself spiritually.

Avoiding rice has become a strong cultural tradition over time. Many families and communities come together to observe this fast, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose. It’s a time for reflection and devotion.

Some people also believe that fasting helps detoxify the body. By avoiding heavy foods like rice, they feel lighter and more focused during prayers and meditation.
