If you have a gym bro in your life, you might have heard about testosterone-maxxing, a growing trend among men looking to build muscle. This approach involves using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), originally meant for men with low testosterone (Low-T).
TRT involves injecting testosterone into the muscles, and many users claim it boosts muscle growth, energy, confidence, and mental clarity. However, experts warn that it comes with risks.
Dr. Theodore Strange, an internist, cautions that TRT can affect the heart, blood count, prostate, and adrenal glands. Side effects may include acne, lower sperm count, testicle shrinkage, and a higher risk of blood clots, heart attacks, or strokes. Additionally, stopping TRT can lead to muscle loss.
Long-term use may even shut down the body's natural testosterone production. Despite the risks, some, like fitness coach Adam Katz, believe the benefits outweigh the dangers. "I'd rather live a life with higher testosterone," he says.
If you're considering TRT, experts strongly recommend consulting a doctor before starting.
