General Asim Munir has been promoted to Field Marshal, making him only the second in Pakistan's history after Ayub Khan.
Unlike Ayub, who promoted himself in 1959 after becoming President, Munir's elevation has come from the civilian government, reflecting a more democratic approach.
Unlike Ayub, who stepped back from commanding the Army after assuming the presidency, Munir will continue as Chief of Army Staff until 2027, thanks to a law extending service terms.
Munir has a distinguished military career, beginning with his commissioning in 1986. He received the Sword of Honour and has trained in Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia.
He has held key roles such as Director General of Military Intelligence, DG ISI during the 2019 Pulwama attack, and Quartermaster General before becoming Army Chief in 2022.
As Field Marshal, Munir enjoys ceremonial perks including a lifelong active service status, a special baton, and five-star insignia. This elevation enhances his stature and symbolizes strong civil-military ties in Pakistan.
