Dr Prahlada Ramarao, a distinguished Indian missile scientist from Karnataka, has returned to the spotlight after the Akash missile system successfully intercepted aerial threats from Pakistan on 8 and 9 May 2025.
Calling it the most fulfilling day of his life, he remarked, "Watching the missile I helped develop neutralise enemy threats was like seeing my life's work come alive."
Handpicked by the late Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as the youngest project director for the Akash missile, Dr Ramarao led its development from concept to frontline deployment. Today, Akash is a cornerstone of India’s air defence, able to track 64 targets and launch 12 missiles simultaneously.
Beyond Akash, Dr Ramarao has contributed to nearly 10 missile systems, including Astra and the Indo-Russian BrahMos. His innovations have bolstered India's global reputation, with nations like Armenia procuring Indian-made defence systems.
Awarded the Padma Shri, Dr Ramarao continues to serve in advisory and academic roles, inspiring a new generation of scientists.
His work not only secures India's skies but strengthens its strategic autonomy and defence self-reliance.
