In Odisha, two royal sisters transformed their 200-year-old ancestral home, Belgadia Palace, into a stunning boutique hotel-blending heritage with sustainability. Akshita Bhanj Deo and Mrinalika Bhanj Deo, from the historic Bhanja dynasty, grew up in the palace but saw it slowly lose its cultural vibrance over time.
In 2015, they decided to restore it-not just as a luxury stay, but as a space where people could experience Odisha’s rich art, culture, and traditions. After five years of careful renovation, preserving antique furniture, architecture, and royal aesthetics, the palace reopened in 2019.
What makes it unique is its focus on sustainability and community. The sisters employ and train locals, promote regional cuisine, and showcase traditional art forms like Chhau dance and handicrafts.
Today, the palace attracts visitors from around the world, turning a fading heritage site into a thriving cultural and economic hub.
