India’s new draft IT rules could significantly change how social media works-for both platforms and creators. The government is proposing stricter regulations that increase control over online content, especially posts related to news and current affairs.
A major shift is that even regular users, influencers, and creators could be treated like news publishers if they consistently share informational or opinion-based content. This brings more responsibility-and more scrutiny.
Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and X may also be required to strictly follow government advisories. Failure to comply could risk their legal protection, pushing them to remove content faster and more cautiously.
While the aim is to curb misinformation, many fear it could lead to over-regulation and self-censorship.
In simple terms, the gap between creators and publishers is shrinking-making India’s digital space more regulated and closely monitored than before.
