After years of delay, India’s Census is finally back, but this time it puts citizens at the center of the process.
Census 2027 introduces self-enumeration, a major shift from the traditional door-to-door model. Citizens can now log in through an official portal, fill in their own details, mark their household on a digital map, and generate a unique Self-Enumeration ID, all before a census officer arrives. It gives people control, reduces errors, and makes the process significantly faster.
The census will be conducted in two phases with clearly defined timelines. The first phase, which began on 1 April 2026 and will continue until September 2026, focuses on house listing and housing conditions, capturing details about living conditions, access to basic amenities, and asset ownership. The second phase will take place in early 2027, with 1 March 2027 as the reference date, and will focus on population enumeration, covering individual details such as age, education, occupation, and migration.
Self-enumeration is integrated within this timeline. It opens briefly, around 10 to 15 days before officials begin visiting households in each area. Since the rollout is staggered across states, this window is short and highly location-specific, making it easy to miss if you are not paying attention.
And that’s exactly why it matters.
Census data shapes how cities expand, where infrastructure is built, how resources are distributed, and how policies are designed. It influences jobs, welfare schemes, and political representation, ultimately shaping the opportunities and development citizens experience over the next decade.
Census 2027 is not just about counting people, it is about defining the country’s future, and for the first time, citizens have a direct role in shaping it.
