India is facing a critical paradox: while its economy grows, a staggering 47-53% of its workforce remains unskilled for the high-demand roles of the AI era. Enter upGrad, the edtech unicorn led by Ronnie Screwvala, which has shifted its focus from simple online courses to a comprehensive, industry-aligned ecosystem. By launching 40 "Learning Support Centres" by March 2026, upGrad is embracing a "phygital" model—blending online scalability with offline mentorship to ensure learners are not just "certified" but "job-ready." Their strategy targets the "Big 4" emerging skills: AI, data analytics, cybersecurity, and what they call "Power Skills"—human-centric capabilities like problem-solving and collaboration.
The impact is already showing on the corporate balance sheet. According to a 2026 study by upGrad Enterprise, Indian firms that prioritize these "power skills" report profit margins 7 percentage points higher than those that don't. However, the challenge remains steep; currently, 60% of Indian companies allocate less than 5% of their HR budget to skilling. upGrad is bridging this gap by partnering with global giants like Microsoft and Meta to create "portfolio careers," where skills are more portable than job titles. As India aims to become a global services leader by 2047, upGrad’s mission to upskill millions is no longer just a business plan—it’s a national economic necessity.
