A sudden flash flood in the Subarnarekha River has wreaked havoc in Odisha's Balasore district, affecting over 50,000 people and prompting large-scale rescue and relief operations. The unexpected surge in water levels, triggered by heavy upstream rainfall, inundated several low-lying areas, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes.
Local authorities, along with NDRF and ODRAF teams, are working round the clock to provide relief. Temporary shelters have been set up, and food, water, and medical aid are being distributed to displaced families. Roads and farmlands have also been damaged, raising concerns about long-term impact on local livelihoods.
The Odisha government has issued high alert in flood-prone districts and is closely monitoring water levels in nearby rivers. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed officials to ensure zero casualties and fast rehabilitation.
The incident underscores the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, calling for urgent climate-resilient infrastructure and better flood forecasting systems.
