UPI creates history with over 707 million transactions in a day!

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has hit a landmark milestone: on August 2, 2025, the platform processed over 707 million transactions in a single day, as reported by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This marks a dramatic escalation from the 350 million daily transactions seen in 2023, doubling in just two years.

This meteoric rise aligns with July’s all-time high monthly volume of 1,947 crore (19.47 billion) transactions, valued at approximately ₹25.1 lakh crore, up 35% in volume and 22% in value compared to July 2024. Average daily transactions in July surged to 628 million, up from 613 million in June.

UPI now drives nearly 85% of India’s digital payments, underscoring its dominance in fintech and everyday commerce. Merchant payments form around 62% of daily volume, reflecting widespread adoption across small and local retailers. Users utilize UPI via mobile apps to instantly transfer funds without entering card or bank details—fueling convenience and cashless transactions nationwide.

India aims for 1 billion daily UPI transactions by 2026, a target now within reach given current trends. With more than 500 million active users and expansion into global markets like France and Nepal, UPI continues redefining formal payments.

This record-breaking moment underscores UPI’s pivotal role in India's digital economy and sets the stage for accelerated financial inclusion, startup innovation, and a truly cashless future.
