Japan has reached an extraordinary milestone: nearly 1 lakh people are now aged 100 years or older, the highest number ever recorded in the country. The latest figures show 99,763 centenarians, and what stands out is that almost 88% of them are women.
Experts say this remarkable longevity is not accidental. Japan’s traditional diet - rich in fish, vegetables, fermented foods, and low in processed items - plays a big role. Eating smaller portions and stopping before feeling completely full helps reduce long-term health stress.
Daily movement is another key factor. Many older Japanese remain active through walking, household work, and community activities well into old age. Strong social connections, a sense of purpose, and lifelong routines also protect mental health and slow cognitive decline.
Women tend to live longer partly due to biological factors, but also because they seek preventive healthcare more regularly and maintain stronger social bonds. Combined with Japan’s focus on preventive medicine, these habits help people not just live longer, but live healthier lives.
