The Madras High Court has delivered a scathing reality check to parents across the nation, lamenting the "terrible rat race" that has redefined the Indian education system. Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy observed that while education signifies learning globally, in India, it has been reduced to a desperate scramble for medical and engineering seats. The court’s remarks came during a hearing for a student who was forced to drop Mathematics for a "lighter" subject to focus on NEET, only to find herself at a crossroads after failing the entrance exam.
The judge criticized the "madness" where even mother tongues are sacrificed for subjects perceived to be easier, all in a bid to secure professional admission. He noted that such parental pressure often leads to poor academic choices, leaving students stranded when their singular goal of medicine or engineering remains unfulfilled. Emphasizing that law should favor "truth over procedure," the court permitted the student to take a supplementary Mathematics exam to pursue engineering. This ruling serves as a stern warning against the toxic culture of entrance-exam-oriented education that treats children as racehorses rather than learners, urging a return to the true essence of education.
