India has blocked the X (formerly Twitter) accounts of Chinese state-run media outlets Global Times and Xinhua over their spread of misinformation related to Operation Sindoor, a military operation targeting cross-border terrorism.
This action came after the Indian Embassy in Beijing publicly rebuked Global Times for circulating unverified claims about alleged losses faced by Indian forces. In a statement on X, the Embassy advised the outlet to fact-check before publishing, highlighting the ethical responsibility of journalism.
The decision followed a surge of disinformation online from accounts sympathetic to Pakistan, spreading misleading visuals and false narratives. India's Press Information Bureau also flagged such content as recycled or doctored.
The official X account of Global Times now shows the message: "Account Withheld in IN in response to a legal demand."
Separately, India also responded firmly to China's renewed attempts to rename locations in Arunachal Pradesh, calling it a baseless territorial claim.
The MEA reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an inalienable part of India.
