Former US President Donald Trump recently urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to avoid expanding manufacturing operations in India, despite India offering a "no-tariff deal" to attract American companies.
This move came amid geopolitical tensions, particularly surrounding Trump's claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. However, Indian commentators remain unfazed.
Chartered Accountant Nitin Kaushik stated that India "only has gains to book," emphasizing Apple's cost advantages in India compared to the US. Social media users also pointed out that Apple's decisions are driven more by economics than politics.
A senior Indian official echoed this, stating that India has already established itself as a "significant mobile manufacturing hub." Apple has produced $22 billion worth of products in India in FY2025 and aims to make India a major base for US-bound iPhones by 2026 as it diversifies away from China.
Despite Trump's remarks, Apple has reassured the Indian government that its investment and manufacturing plans remain unchanged, reaffirming India's growing role in Apple's global supply chain.
