India’s ambitious PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 1 million rooftop solar installations across the country. Announced in February 2024, this initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), is the world’s largest domestic solar program. It aims to bring solar power to 10 million homes by March 2027, transforming India’s energy landscape.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi highlighted the achievement, stating that the scheme has empowered over 10 lakh households with solar energy, promoting sustainability and self-reliance. As of March 10, 10.09 lakh installations have been completed nationwide, with 47.3 lakh applications received.
The government launched the initiative with a financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore, facilitating rooftop solar panel installations to provide free electricity to eligible households. Additionally, 6.13 lakh beneficiaries have already availed subsidies, totaling ₹4,770 crore.
To date, the scheme has contributed over 3 GW of rooftop solar capacity, accelerating local manufacturing of inverters and Balance of Plant (BoP) components. Looking ahead, the government is working towards solarizing 20 lakh homes by October 2025.
Under this program, power distribution companies (DISCOMs) serve as state implementation agencies (SIAs), ensuring efficient net metering, inspections, and commissioning of installations. The initiative’s incentive component for DISCOMs has a financial allocation of ₹4,950 crore, replacing the previous Grid Connected Rooftop Solar (GCRT) Phase II program.
With its rapid adoption and increasing installations, the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is shaping India’s transition toward a more sustainable and self-sufficient energy future.
