The upcoming Delhi Assembly elections are just around the corner, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making some major waves with its promises. One of the standout announcements? Anti-Romeo Squads to combat sexual harassment in public spaces!
So, what exactly are these squads, and why are they such a hot topic? Let's break it down!
What Are 'Anti-Romeo' Squads?
First launched in Uttar Pradesh in 2017 by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Anti-Romeo squads were formed with one clear goal: to make public spaces safer for women by cracking down on sexual harassment. The squads are made up of a police sub-inspector and at least two constables, including a female officer, and they patrol areas that tend to be hotspots for harassment – think parks, universities, and even cinema halls.
While the squads have been active in UP, they have stirred up some controversy. Critics argue that some squads have taken a vigilante-style approach, with accusations of overreach and over-policing. But despite these concerns, the BJP is determined to bring this model to Delhi, aiming to make public spaces safer for everyone.
