Eid is one of the most important festivals for Muslims around the world. But have you ever noticed that its date changes every year? This is because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, not the sun.
How the Islamic Calendar Works?
The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, meaning it follows the phases of the moon. Unlike the Gregorian calendar (which is used worldwide and follows the sun), the Islamic year is 11-12 days shorter. Because of this, Ramadan and Eid move earlier each year.
When Does Eid Start?
The beginning of Eid depends on sighting the crescent moon. Here’s how it works:
1. On the 29th night of Ramadan, Muslims look for the new moon after sunset.
2. If the moon is visible, Ramadan ends, and Eid is celebrated the next day.
3. If the moon is not seen, Ramadan continues for one more day, and Eid is celebrated after 30 days of fasting.
Why Do Some Countries Celebrate on Different Days?
Since the moon appears at different times in different parts of the world, some countries may celebrate Eid on different days. This is why some Muslims may see the moon earlier, while others might have to wait an extra day.
The moon is not just a symbol in Islam; it decides when important religious events like Ramadan and Eid take place. This makes the festival even more special and meaningful, as Muslims around the world come together under the same sky to celebrate.
