Why do we wear rings on the third finger of the left hand?

The tradition of wearing a wedding ring on the third finger of the left hand is one that spans centuries, filled with rich symbolism and cultural significance. While many of us wear this cherished symbol of commitment without a second thought, the origins of this practice are rooted in fascinating ancient beliefs.

In ancient Egyptian culture, it was believed that the "Vena Amoris" (the "vein of love") ran directly from the third finger of the left hand to the heart. This connection made it the perfect location for couples to wear their wedding rings, signifying their eternal love and deep emotional bond. The notion was simple but powerful: by placing a ring on this finger, couples were symbolically tethering their hearts together forever.

This belief was later adopted by the Romans, who referred to the same finger as the "Anulus Pronubus" or marriage ring. For them, the tradition held deep meaning as well, reinforcing the connection between the left hand’s third finger and the heart, and by extension, eternal love.

As centuries passed, the symbolism expanded. In medieval Europe, wearing a wedding ring on the left hand was thought to offer protection from evil spirits. The left hand, often associated with the "sinister" or "unlucky," was believed to need the blessing of love and protection that a wedding ring provided.

In modern times, many cultures still honor this centuries-old tradition. However, it's not universal. For example, European countries and some Indian cultures wear engagement and wedding rings on the right hand, symbolizing honor and trust.
