
A Zero FIR is a system that allows victims to file a police complaint at any police station, regardless of where the crime occurred. Normally, an FIR must be filed at the police station that has jurisdiction over the crime's location, but with a Zero FIR, this barrier is removed.
The complaint is initially recorded with the number "0" and then transferred to the appropriate police station for further investigation.
This system was introduced after the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case to ensure victims could report serious crimes like rape, murder, or kidnapping without unnecessary delays.
The Zero FIR eliminates the frustration of being sent from one station to another, which often happens when the crime took place outside the jurisdiction.
For instance, if someone is attacked while traveling in a different city, they can report the crime to the nearest police station, which will file a Zero FIR and transfer it to the relevant jurisdiction.
This ensures quick action and justice, especially in vulnerable situations, by allowing victims to get help immediately.
