The Narendra Modi government has clarified that the United States has not imposed country-specific or reciprocal tariffs on India. Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada, while responding to a query in the Rajya Sabha, stated that the US is still investigating non-reciprocal trade practices but has not yet taken any specific action against India.
Despite US President Donald Trump's repeated criticism of India's high tariffs, Prasada reassured that no new country-specific levies have been imposed. However, the US has applied additional duties on steel and aluminum imports from all countries, which India continues to monitor closely.
The minister emphasized that India and the US remain engaged in discussions to expand bilateral trade in a fair and mutually beneficial manner. With Trump's reciprocal tariff policy set to take effect on April 2, the situation remains fluid, and further developments are anticipated.
