The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a strong directive to the Karnataka government, ordering immediate action against individuals or groups attempting to disrupt the theatrical release of the upcoming film Thug Life. A bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the need to protect artistic freedom and called on the state to contain "any divisive element" that may incite unrest or intimidate cinema operators.
The petition before the court cited rising threats, social media intimidation campaigns, and on-ground protests, alleging attempts to block the film's release under the guise of cultural offense. The court reminded the state of its constitutional obligation to uphold freedom of expression and the rule of law.
While details about the source of opposition remain unclear, the bench directed Karnataka’s DGP to ensure law and order is maintained during the film’s opening.
Legal experts say the court’s stance sends a clear message against the growing culture of pre-release censorship-by-mob. With the film's release around the corner, all eyes are now on whether state authorities will effectively ensure a disruption-free launch.
