Spice Up or Mess Up? The Chilli Debate

Green chillies are a staple in many cuisines, adding not just heat but also a variety of health benefits. According to home chef Manju Mittal, incorporating one green chilli into daily meals can enhance metabolism, promote clearer skin, and even aid in weight loss. While this claim has drawn attention, nutrition experts suggest a more cautious approach.

Dietician Fauziya Ansari from Apollo Spectra Mumbai acknowledges that green chillies are rich in essential vitamins and antioxidants, which contribute to overall well-being. However, she warns that their high capsaicin content can irritate the stomach lining, leading to discomfort such as acidity, heartburn, and a burning sensation. Individuals with acid reflux, ulcers, or sensitive digestion should be particularly careful, as frequent consumption might aggravate their condition rather than provide benefits.

Beyond digestive concerns, chillies can also trigger pain receptors in the digestive tract, intensifying discomfort as they pass through the system. While they offer metabolism-boosting properties, moderation is key to reaping their benefits without unwanted side effects.

For those who tolerate spice well, incorporating green chillies in controlled amounts may provide health advantages. However, for individuals with pre-existing digestive issues, it is advisable to limit their intake and seek alternatives for boosting metabolism.

As with any dietary choice, understanding your body’s tolerance is crucial. While green chillies offer nutritional perks, they are not a one-size-fits-all health solution.
