You might have noticed “RR” written on some boarding passes or railway-related documents and wondered what it actually means. While it sounds like a travel code, its meaning is quite different from what most people assume.
In simple terms, “RR” stands for Railway Receipt. It is not related to passenger tickets, but to the transportation of goods by train. When goods are handed over to the railways for shipment, a receipt is issued as proof-this is called the Railway Receipt or RR.
This document acts like an official acknowledgment that the railways have accepted the goods and are responsible for delivering them to the destination. It also works as a tracking reference and is required for collecting the shipment at the receiving station.
Because of the name “boarding pass,” many people confuse it with passenger travel documents. But in reality, RR is mainly used in freight and logistics, not for regular train passengers.
So next time you see “RR,” remember-it’s not your ticket, it’s proof of goods being transported by rail.
