A 300-member delegation from the Pune Municipal Corporation visited Indore to study its successful cleanliness model. Indore, ranked India's cleanest city, has set a benchmark in waste management that other cities aim to replicate.
Led by Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhonsle and MLA Hemant Rasane, the Pune team toured key locations such as the Devguradiya trenching ground plant, garbage transfer stations, the ICCC command center, and the door-to-door waste collection system. Their goal was to understand how Indore maintains its top ranking in urban sanitation.
Municipal Commissioner Shivam Verma and Additional Commissioner Abhilash Mishra explained Indore's transformation from overflowing garbage bins to a bin-free system. GPS-monitored waste collection ensures efficiency and timeliness.
Indore segregates waste into six categories and has introduced initiatives like the Thaila Bank, Bartan Bank, Zero Waste Events, and Disposal-Free Areas. Waste is processed at material recovery facilities, dry waste plants, and compost plants.
The delegation visited Asia's largest biogas CNG plant at Devguradiya, where wet waste is converted into biogas for public transport. Inspired by Indore's success, Pune officials plan to implement similar strategies for better waste management.
Indore's model is reshaping cleanliness efforts in India, and Pune's initiative signals a strong commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
