On Sunday, Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana set a new record for the most international runs in a calendar year in women’s cricket across all formats. She achieved this milestone by scoring 91 runs against the West Indies in a one-day international (ODI) in Vadodara, bringing her total for 2024 to 1,602 runs.

Mandhana, the left-handed opener, surpassed South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, who had finished the year with 1,593 runs, reclaiming the record she had set in 2018. In 2022, the record had been overtaken by England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Mandhana’s career, showcasing her consistency and prowess across formats.

At 28, Mandhana has had a remarkable year, not only surpassing the record for international runs but also setting the record for most runs in a calendar year in women’s T20 internationals, with 763 runs in 2024. Her remarkable form has contributed significantly to India’s success in various formats.

On Sunday, India posted a total of 314-9 while batting first in the ODI, with Mandhana’s contribution being a major highlight. The team will play two more ODIs against the West Indies before the year concludes, providing Mandhana with further opportunities to add to her record.

Mandhana’s record-breaking performance is a testament to her skill, determination, and consistency, further solidifying her place as one of the leading figures in women’s cricket worldwide. As she continues to perform at the highest level, her achievements inspire both current and aspiring cricketers.
