Lovely Professional University (LPU) has become the first private Indian university to end all Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with institutions in Turkiye and Azerbaijan.
The decision follows recent geopolitical developments that LPU believes conflict with India’s national interests, particularly due to the pro-Pakistan stance of these countries amid heightened Indo-Pak tensions.
LPU has terminated six academic collaborations, including student and faculty exchange programs, joint research projects, and dual degree initiatives.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, LPU's Founder Chancellor and Rajya Sabha MP, emphasized the university's commitment to India's integrity and sovereignty, stating that defending national security extends beyond borders into every academic and international partnership.
This move aligns with similar actions by other Indian institutions, such as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which suspended its MoU with Inonu University, Turkiye, citing national security reasons.
These steps reflect a broader sentiment in India responding to Turkiye and Azerbaijan's support for Pakistan after India's recent military operation, 'Operation Sindoor.'
