Lauki Peel: Should You Eat It or Not?

Lauki, also known as bottle gourd, is a versatile vegetable celebrated for its nutritional benefits. Traditionally, the vegetable is peeled before cooking, but is consuming the peel safe or beneficial? Experts offer insights into this question.

According to Edwina Raj, head of clinical nutrition and dietetics at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, the peel of lauki is a powerhouse of nutrients. It contains dietary fiber, which supports digestion and helps maintain a sense of fullness, making it a great addition to a weight management diet. Additionally, the peel provides antioxidants and essential vitamins that boost overall health.

However, there are valid concerns about consuming the peel. The tough texture of the lauki peel can be unappealing for some, and more importantly, it may harbor pesticide residues or contaminants if not washed thoroughly. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend washing lauki rigorously under running water and scrubbing the peel before use. Opting for organic produce, when possible, further reduces the risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.

While peeling lauki is a common practice, skipping this step after proper cleaning can enhance the vegetable's health benefits. Incorporating the peel into dishes like soups or stir-fries is an easy way to add fiber and nutrients to your meals without compromising on safety or flavor.
