As of April 2025, Japan has officially kicked off a four-day workweek for government employees and it's giving major "finally!" vibes.
Led by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this bold move is all about boosting work-life balance and tackling the country's low birth rate.
In a nation known for its intense work culture and burnout levels, this shift feels like a total reset. Government workers now get three days off every week, and the policy is especially designed to support working parents particularly moms.
There's even an option for parents of young kids to clock out early (with a slightly smaller paycheck) so they can actually spend time with their families.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike says the goal is to build a workplace where life events like childbirth don't force people to quit their jobs.
The vibe? Work smarter, live better. While some cultural resistance still exists, Japan's move could inspire a global rethink of the 9-to-5 grind. One small step for Tokyo, one giant leap for our collective sanity.
